Stringing Beads has been a well recognised and loved part of various preschool programmes for a long time. Pattern making has been another engaging activity at this level.
Beginning with extending patterns of 1-1 (One Blue-One Yellow), it can be continued to more and more complex ones. While 1-1, 2-2 can be done at pre-primary level for higher levels patterns such as 2-2-1-2-2 and 3-2-1-2-3 can be extended thus creating various probabilities of patterns for children to create.
The very process of creating malas and counting the beads in them itself provide an early introduction to numbers and an experience with unstructured materials.
